The OpenVXI is a VoiceXML Interpreter developed by SpeechWorks International, Inc., available as open source to developers worldwide. The OpenVXI provides a key VoiceXML component to all developers who want to add VoiceXML capabilities to their products without developing that technology on their own and therefore, without having to track changes and additions to the VoiceXML standard over time. For companies with VoiceXML platforms, the OpenVXI serves as a reference to ensure that they are executing VoiceXML consistently so they can deliver cross-platform compatibility. As with other open source technologies, developers can take advantage of any subsequent contributions to the OpenVXI made by SpeechWorks or any other developers worldwide. For example, to build a speech browser, developers can take advantage of the SpeechWorks OpenSpeech Browser Platform Integration Kit, based on the OpenVXI. The high-level OpenSpeech Browser Platform architecture is illustrated below.
The OpenVXI is distributed according to the terms of the SpeechWorks Public License.

The OpenVXI package consists of the following components:
The architecture of the overall system is described in the Architecture Description, while the OpenVXI interfaces are documented in the Interface Reference. The Release Notes describe the VoiceXML 1.0 interpretation and coverage as well as limitations of the reference component implementations. The Build and Installation Instructions describe how to build the OpenVXI package from source, while the Configuration and Run Instructions describe how to configure and run the OpenVXI. The SpeechWorks Public License provides licensing terms.
The OpenVXI is available as open source via Carnegie Mellon's speech software download site for anyone interested in creating VoiceXML-enabled applications with minimal initial investment cost in research and development, including development for hand-held and portable devices. You may also want to join the OpenVXI mailing list to be notified of OpenVXI releases as well as to obtain and supply assistance in using the OpenVXI.
